Sicko (too good of a title)

A lot of people in this world have problems. The problems come in all shapes and sizes, but they nevertheless exist and affect every step a person makes, especially every person they meet. These problems exist because of parents (the way they're raised), or culture (the way they're influenced), and education (what they learn.) Parents are a huge factor. I can think of so many examples, as I'm sure you can. But what do we do about these problems? How do we resolve them? They're psychiatrists, medication, councilors, but does it all truly help, or is it just the mind telling you it does? I had a friend once who would go to the doctor every time she didn't feel well. When you live in California going to the doctor is expensive. We don't have free health care like most nations. She would come back home with a new problem, a new medication to take, to add to the shelf of the other medications she takes. What a depressing life, but it got her by, right? Does that make it ok? If you've watched Michael Moore's Sicko you would see that the people who were able to go to another country and get themselves checked out - they were stripped from MOST of the medication they were taking here in U.S. Why is that, I wonder.... Because of ADVERTISEMENTS, because of TELEVISION. Because people think they have a problem because the commercial listed symptoms they have. Like, not sleeping enough? You must have a sleeping disorder! Cha-ching! I'm not saying depression, or insomnia don't exist. They do, but I do believe most of the "problems" can be easily solved by telling the mind to. Not saying that step is an easy process, either. But knowing the difference.. you have got to know the difference! Will power is REAL. It's the force that tells you to keep running in a marathon, even when your body is ready to give up. We are not zombies, so we need to stop acting that way.

Sincerely,

Lettuce Head

  1. Dear Lettucehead,

(I think the phrase 'Dear Lettucehead' is fun-FYI) I heartily agree with your theory on medications vs. willpower. Totally. I hate meds-and the fact that damn near all of them have a list of side effects 2 miles long is def a deterrent. This is just further evidence that I need to move to Europe ASAP.

    Sincerely,

    me

  2. I'm not sure if I agree completely. I come from a country where the problems Americans are so quick to medicate (ADHD, depression, etc.) aren't even considered real problems, so I see kids my age who grow up with these problems and have no idea how to work on them. So, on the one hand, I agree with you, on the other, I don't. I guess it's a case-to-case basis.

  3. Sam, I totally want to move to Europe as well. Have you ever been? Thanks for reading, by the way.

Fickle Cattle, thank you for reading too. I appreciate the feedback and giving your insight.

  4. Noooo sadly I have never been out of the country-not even to Canada. This makes me very sad. But one day when I am not living paycheck to paycheck I am totally going. Have you? (Been?)Fickle Cattle has a point-I have no doubt there are plenty of people who have actual conditions & need medication-I just feel as though I've seen over-medication of just about everyone I know. Case by case basis does make sense.

  5. I'm sure that day will come, Sam. I have never been but I'm planning a trip there for the summer. So hopefully nothing gets in the way of that plan! There always seems to be a problem when you're trying to get something done.
