When Did This Happen

I remember being five and not having a fear. I always wanted to be outside and I was a big fan of the horror series Chucky. I remember scrapping my legs, while blood streamed down into my sock, and not having a pitch of any tears. I remember feeling good about it, as if I were a step closer to my goal. I remember my dance recitals and never feeling nervous to be on stage in front of a hundred people. There was never any stress, just  pure fun with no hesitations. I remember going to amusement parks just to get on the rollercoasters. I wasn't afraid of loops, speed, or height like I am today. Most of all, I remember surprising myself and learning the capabilities I truly have, which has been easily forgotten.

I've realized the older I become, the more cautious I am. I have grown fears, but I wonder if that's a bad thing. I mean, shouldn't it be the other way around? That I should be afraid of what I don't know, rather than embracing it? Is it because I know more information about the world than I did back then? Is it because danger has increased and there are more things to be concerned about? Is it because I'm more aware of the outcome of failure (on my part, or theirs)? Or is it the lack of trust I see in people (noting the bad instead of the good)?

Fear is instinct. Does it drive you, or drive you away?

  1. As I think you know, I used to go gliding. I explained to my instructor that every time I was at launch point waiting to take off, I felt frightened. He told me the danger is when a pilot doesn’t feel frightened at that point.

I think fear is natural, and we shouldn’t let it prevent us from doing anything.
